Changes to Paracanoe Races at Canadian Sprint CanoeKayak Championships

Changes have been made to the Canadian Sprint CanoeKayak Championships schedule to bring the Paracanoe events on the race card in line with the 2014-2015 Sprint Racing Discipline Rules.

Under section 5.11 of the rulebook, the listing for Paracanoe events states:

Paracanoe events shall match Paracanoe events included in the ICF World Canoe Sprint Championships.

The events for ICF World Canoe Sprint Championships changed from 2014 to 2015. As such, the CKC Nationals events must change to reflect this.

The Paracanoe events to be run at CKC Nationals will be:

Men’s and Women’s:

KL1       VL1

KL2       VL2

KL3       VL3

In terms of classification, the VL1, VL2 and VL3 events correspond with the old V-A, V-TA and V-LTA.

The new KL1, KL2 and KL3 classifications however, do come with new standards.

Classification for Paracanoe events at the Canadian Sprint CanoeKayak Championships will take place on Thursday, August 27 at the Rideau Canoe Club.

Unfortunately, some athletes who raced in the K-LTA category, do not qualify to race in any of the new Kayak Paracanoe categories that the ICF has set.

Because of this, two exhibition Paracanoe Open K1 events for Men and Women will be added to the schedule. These events will allow those Para athletes excluded by the new ICF Classifications to race at CKC Nationals.

CanoeKayak Canada is aware that these changes in classification and categorization in the Paracanoe discipline create challenges for those athletes who are working hard, dedicating themselves to our sport and striving for competitive excellence. Going forward, CanoeKayak Canada will challenge itself and its partners to ensure our sport, and its marquee sprint event, the Canadian Sprint CanoeKayak Championships, is both inclusive and competitive for all of our athletes.
