It is with great sadness that I announce that Lucy Slade, Rideau member from 1981 to the late 1990s passed away today in Vancouver as a victim of cancer. Lucy left behind her husband Andy and her two children.
Lucy was daughter of Charles Slade, life time member and member of our board of directors of the Club.
Lucy Slade 1972 - 2011
The Slade family became active at Rideau in the mid 80's and was active on the water, the club executive and the Waves. From 1989 to 1994 Lucy won 3 gold, 4 silver and 7 bronze medals in kayak and canoe at Canadian Championships.
Lucy represented Rideau for 10 years and in her quiet manner was dynamic on the water in both canoe and kayak. She was well mannered and respected by her many friends in the paddling world and a role model to our young paddlers.
At the 1991 Canada Games in Saskatoon, Lucy was the top paddler winning gold medals in K-1, K-2, K-4 and K-1 6000m. Also in 1991, at the Pan-Am Games in Cuba she won a silver medal and her photo was in the paper as she kissed Fidel Castro.
Members of the Rideau Canoe Club offer our sincere condolences to Andy, children and the Slade family.
Messages of condolences to Andy and his family can be sent to aball@imagotrackers.com.
